Pendembu-Kailahun road, dry season, 1967 (1 of 2)

Pendembu-Kailahun road, dry season, 1967 (1 of 2)

The motor road from Pendembu to Kailahun (16.5 miles) was opened in 1919 or 1920, largely through the joint efforts of the paramount chiefs of Upper Bambara and Luawa chiefdoms. It was initially very winding, as it followed old foot trails, and so narrow that two approaching vehicles could pass only with great difficulty. Shortly later, the British colonial government widened and somewhat staightened it, in order to increase the traffic in palm kernels coming to the Pendembu railhead.

In 1967, it was actually a good road, although it presented some difficulties.

In the dry season, there was lots of loose gravel, both in the middle and at the outer edges. My VW would have torn out its underside (by scraping on the middle ridge) if Ihad driven it in the established tracks then. Instead, I had to straddle the left track, putting one set of tires squarely on either the center or the lateral gravel ridge and the other set of tires, along the edge of the other ridge. This made steering difficult at more than 35 mph. Passing lorries threw up dense and lingering clouds of blinding dust, too.

During the rainy season, there were stretches where the road surface was like modeling clay. There, the lorries would cut deep ruts, which would have high-centered my VW. I had to avoid them by driving far to the left edge of the surface, with my inner set of tires between the ruts. Confronting an on-coming, often speeding lorry on this narrow road was always a thrill during the rains, as most of them had poor suspension systems that made them unsteady when braking on the slick surface. (Perhaps for this very reason, some lorry drivers seemed to make little use of their brakes.)

Nevertheless, the road was always passable. And that's important in view that this road was THE link with Kailahun, Koindu, and points beyond into Guinee and Liberia.
