After many years of storage, this truck was purchased from the St. Lawrence Starch Co. which was founded in 1889. It was used to make deliveries between Toronto and Hamilton. A delivery would take a whole day, since the top speed on the truck was 14mph. It is equipped with solid rubber Firestone tires and has no shock absorbers. The decorative side panels are a reproduction of a 1901 newspaper advertisement for the company.
War orders pushed Packard truck production to almost double that of the passenger cars, to a record 4,000 units. The Czar of Russia had opted for the Packard trucks ordering 600 of them. These trucks were instrumental in turning the tide of World War I forever in favor of the allies. The Victory at “Chateau Thierry” …. the furious engagement which was won and made possible through the performance of a single Packard Motor Truck.

2 Million Tires and the Reef

2 Million Tires and the Reef

In the late 60s and early 70s scientists started thinking of putting down artificial reefs. Tires made good substrate if they could be kept in one place. They are only 3-5 lbs negative in the water. So Good Year looking for a good way to get rid of tires donated a "bundeling machine" that would strat the tires together in groups of 10. Hoever the strap holding the tires together used a metal clip. 5-10 years later that clip melted in the saltwater and now all 2 mil tires are free in a pile of Sunrive Blvd in Fort Lauderdale in about 70ft of water. They have moved to within the edge of the reef. With good storm surge, they are picked up and bounced over the reef. Large storms bring large batches clogging up the beach.
