Lawton, OK inset map 1966 Inset map of Lawton on 1966 Oklahoma highway map depicts highway routes and other major thorougfares through the city. The Pioneer Expressway (now Interstate 44) skirted the downtown area and continued across the east and south sides of the city as US 277-281 and also was designated as US 62 to the north of the three-level interchange near the downtown area. The 16-mile expressway through the Lawton/Fort Sill area also included interchanges at Fort Sill's Key Gate and Gate 2, and connected the two sections of the H.E. Bailey Turnpike north to Oklahoma City and south to Wichita Falls. The former US 277-281 route through the city over 2nd Street in the downtown area and 11th Street near Lawton Municipal Airport and southward was now designated as Business U.S. 281 and also picked up SH 36, which began in north Lawton at Fort Sill's Gate 3 on Fort Sill Boulevard (signed as 11th Street south of Gore Boulevard). South of the Pioneer Expressway, where Business 281 ended, the old US 277-281 continued as SH 36 for three more miles to the Six-Mile Y near Geronimo where 36 turned west to Faxon and Chattanooga crossing under the expressway at the starting point of the south turnpike section and US 277-281 diverted from the expressway east back to the Y and continued south on the older route. US 62 generally followed Cache Road through the city as a four-lane divided highway from the interchange to the Fort Sill Boulevard overpass and then widened to six lanes west to 52nd Street, where it narrowed to two lanes before leaving the city. The 52nd and Cache Road location would later become the starting point of a new US 62 alignment between Lawton and Altus. State Highway 7 entered the city from the east on Lee Boulevard and continued west to Sheridan Road where the route turned north for two miles to the junction with US 62 at the Sheridan/Cache Road intersection in west Lawton. From this point west through Altus to the Texas border near Hollis, US 62 and SH 7 were co-signed on a duplexed highway route - a situation that ended in 1971 with the completion of the new US 62 to Altus and the deletion of SH 7's designation west of Lawton with its western terminus now at the 62 junction or Cache/Sheridan intersection.
